How are US diploma in India ratedasks the HC: Seeking clarity on the equivalence and authenticity of an American high school diploma awarded by Indian institutions, as it could have a bearing on the academic future of hundreds of students, the Punjab and Haryana high court has asked the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to explain the nature of appraisal undertaken for issuing such certificates."The AIU shall file an affidavit through competent officer about the nature of appraisal undertaken for issuing equivalence certificates for diplomas from institutes run in India, but accredited to foreign accreditation commissions such as North West Accreditation Commission (NWAC), USA," ordered Justice K Kannan while hearing a case.Justice Kannan also asked AIU to produce proof that North West Accreditation Commission was authorized by the US state department of education to offer accreditation elsewhere."The association shall also give details of equivalence certificates on the basis of which any student has taken admission in other professional courses like MBBS and engineering," directed the HC.The matter had reached the high court through a petition filed by Ludhiana-resident Anmol Sharma, who was seeking admission to bachelor of homoeopathic medicine and surgery (BHMS) course in Guru Ravi Dass Ayurvedic University, Hoshiarpur, on the basis of an American high school diploma obtained by him from Shivalik Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar. The diploma was stated to be prescribed by the NWAC, USA.The university had initially given provisional admission to the petitioner for session 2013-14, but later issued an order on June 6, 2014, canceling Anmol's admission on the ground that he had acquired Class XII certification from an institution that was not approved or recognized by the Central Board of School Examination (CBSE).In its orders, HC has also asked the petitioner to secure sufficient information about credibility of institutes offering such diplomas, the number of students studying in the school and details of persons who have obtained admission in any other professional college in India after studying there.
